Last week it was Luis Gonzalez who expressed strong interest in returning to the Diamondbacks this season before retiring. This week it was Curt Schilling telling KTAR’s Doug and Wolf that he wants to pitch for a contending team, and strongly considers Arizona a contending team. He went even further by expressing his admiration for D-Backs GM Josh Brynes.

The Snakes still have interest in bringing Randy Johnson back for one more year, and Curt Schilling would figure to be out of the team’s price range. Not to mention, Randy and Curt in the starting rotation would represent a huge injury liability. All that aside, imagine if the D-Backs were to bring back their two former aces to pitch with their two current aces plus Max Scherzer. I would pay to see that, but don’t think it likely nor smart, just intriguing.

Gonzo is perhaps more likely than Schilling, but less likely than Randy to return due to the already existing log-jam in the outfield. Unless the D-Backs can trade away Eric Brynes I wouldn’t expect to see Gonzo back here, even in a reserve role.

Orlando Hudson, Tony Clark, Brandon Lyon, Adam Dunn, Juan Cruz, and David Eckstein all have filed for free agency. Orlando Hudson is drawing strong interest from the New York Yankees. Brandon Lyon’s agent said that he hasn’t ruled out a return to the D-Backs saying “Brandon would be thrilled to come back to Arizona.” But Arizona fan would likely be less than thrilled for Lyon to return, although he may perform better if he is placed back in the set-up role where he excelled two seasons ago.
