Baseball’s second season has been over for almost two weeks now and the most interesting bit of news coming from the D-Backs front office is that of a new pool RideNow Powersports and staff reductions.

Never heard of RideNow Powersports? You’re not alone. The company sells new and used motorcycles, ATVs, and watercraft. RideNow takes over the pool sponsorship from Riviera Pools who has entered bankruptcy protection.

The D-Backs announced yesterday that 31 front office positions would be eliminated. Most of the reductions will occur in the broadcast department where reductions are possible due to all of the televised games now appearing on one network, Fox Sports Arizona rather than sharing the schedule with 3TV. The show ‘D-Backs Playin’ Hardball’ might possibly be going away according to D-Backs President Derek Hall. Good riddance!

I am beginning to wonder if the broadcast staff was actually responsible for making personnel decisions over at Chase Field as there is still not much to report on the Diamondbacks offseason roster moves. Obviously they have made it clear they are searching for a new second baseman, being unable to afford Orlando Hudson’s services. Indication is that there are more options for second base than third, so the club will likely pursue a second baseman and keep Mark Reynolds at third base. Texas Rangers second baseman Ramon Vazquez’s agent has been contact by the Diamondbacks and could be a fit. Vazquez hit .290 in 300 at-bats last season.

Randy Johnson has still not filed for free agency, but is expected to unless a deal can be reached by the November 13 deadline. Highly unlikely.

Brandon Webb’s agent has said that he expects for contract extension talks to being shortly. With all indications that Webb would prefer to stay in Arizona.

Pitcher Edgar Gonzalez had been removed from the 40-man roster along with minor leaguer Javier Brito.
